On farm as it starts to cool down

This week we will have fresh organic yearling beef and organic pastured pork, so come on down to the Southern Harvest Farmers Market in Bungendore on Saturday 9am to 1pm and check out what we have.

We will have limited Harvest Boxes available for collection on Saturday (Bungendore) or Sunday (on-farm) only. We do require orders by 2pm Friday for harvesting purposes. Just $40 each and valued at over $50.

If you are keen to be involved in Fair Food in our Region, I encourage you to check out the Polyfaces film screening, Fair Food Focus and Dinner on Monday 9 May in Canberra. More information here. Plus there are a load of upcoming one day courses including Fermented Drinks, Cool Climate Vegetable Growing and Raising Animals Organically.

Produce this week includes the following (if you are ordering a Harvest Box, you’ll get a selection of the produce (excluding meat unless you ask specifically, not each and every item), although you are welcome to let us know if you do want some of everything, and we can add it:

  • Carrots
  • Turnips
  • Cucumbers
  • Salad Mix
  • Rocket
  • Radishes
  • Tomatoes
  • Garlic
  • Zucchini
  • Pumpkin
  • Stir-fry mix
  • Spaghetti Squash

If you would like to order anything in advance, simply reply to this email – but don’t leave it too late as we’ll be busy harvesting and then heading to markets.

On the farm

It has gone back to 30 degrees during the day, despite two cooler days during the week and a little rain – yay! We have over one-third of our early-season garlic in the ground and are still getting the pigs to prep the areas we will plant the later season garlic (so we don’t have to harvest it all at once).

We have pulled up the bulk of our tomato plants and they are hanging experimentally in the shed to keep them from the frost… This week may very well be the last week of ripe tomatoes, and is almost certainly the last of the zucchinis… saying that, the kale and other brassicas are just starting to come on and our salad and stir-fry mixes look set to continue through the season.

We have a few pumpkins still on the vines, so will see what they do.

Our long table lunch is bookings close today, Wednesday 27th April, so if you are still keen book now, otherwise feel free to join us for a tour and bring your own picnic lunch!  Open Day Tours and Caroola Farm Long Table Lunch on Sunday 1 May – tours available at 10.30am and 2pm and lunch 12.00noon. Bookings essential.

We are really excited to be part of the Fair Food Focus in Canberra and Screening of Polyfaces, plus a Fair Food Dinner at A. Baker – book now and be quick if you want to join in.

For those of you who are producers, or thinking about being producers, you are welcome to join us on-farm on the evening of Sunday 8 May for a Fair Food Producers Gathering.

Enjoy the season.
